Ulysses S. Grant supposedly said “If I thought this war was to abolish slavery, I would resign my commission and offer my sword to the other side.” Is this a fake quote? If not, where is the source of this quote?
It is dubious though I have used it. It was reported in an Ohio newspaper and then later used against Grant by people like Horace Greeley.
