I’ve noticed it’s popular in educational circles to teach about the presidency in terms of its primary roles (for example: Chief of State, Chief Executive, Chief Diplomat, etc.). How long has this been a recognized concept? Is it a totally illegitimate framework or is it illegitimate only to the extent to which the particular roles themselves are illegitimate? For example this page (http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/article/seven-roles-one-president) includes the role of Chief Guardian of the Economy. Ha.
    Thanks for considering.

I’m not sure what the answer to this question is. You might ask Professors Gutzman and McClanahan in the U.S. History to 1877 forum.
