    Folks:

I have read Brion McClanahan’s book on Nine Presidents who Screwed Up America. In it he states that John Tyler was a great president that kept his powers within the Constitution. I have come across another book by Edward Crapol from UNC Press that states that Tyler was the exact opposite. How did he come to that conclusion?

Thanks for reading my new book.

Crapol takes the typically Whiggish position that Tyler was violating executive powers throughout his presidency, particularly in regard to foreign policy. Botts wanted him impeached, for example. I don’t agree.

Crapol also assumes the wrongness of Tyler’s Jeffersonian constitutional views. I much prefer Chitwood’s Tyler biography.
