Does anyone have an opinion on the book George Washington’s Sacred Fire (Peter Lillback)? A friend gave me a copy a couple years ago. Flipping through it, my first reaction is I don’t need a 1000+ page book that sets out to prove that Washington was a Christian (or the type of Christian that the author and his audience believes him to be). But perhaps I would be missing something by simply discarding it.

Washington refused the Last Rites and Communion on his deathbed. He even said he didn’t want to see a minister. He extremely rarely, if ever, used Christian references in his public addresses. He was a very prominent member of the Masonic Order, whose theological position was that all religions were right. If he was a Christian, then, it was of the most attenuated kind.
