In the lecture I was listening to about the War between the States, McClanahan said that after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, there was a number of northern soldiers that actually quit fighting because they were not interested in fighting to free the slaves. Does anyone have a source that shows this?

    Thanks

See either of James McPherson’s books about soldiers’ motivations in participating in the war.

I echo Dr. Gutzman. “For Cause and Comrades” is the best study produced on why men fought in the War.
