    Professor Herbener,

Could you please recommend at least one good (basic) article or book on the economic conditions of the Soviet Union from a historical or empirical point of view?

Although I’m aware of sources that deal with socialism from a theoretical perspective, I’m not so sure of good references outside those.

I’m writing a short paper for an English composition class hoping to convince others on the importance of understanding basic economics. I would like to cite such an article/book and quote it to give a concrete example of what socialism can do.

    Thank you so much.

Here’s a popular article by Yuri Malstev, an economist who defected from the U.S.S.R.:

It has a good bibliography at the end.

Also, take a look at the books by Paul Craig Roberts: Alienation and the Soviet Economy and Meltdown, Inside the Soviet Economy.
