I’ve often heard that the South had no slave ships it’s said that it was the North that participated in the slave trade and brought the slaves to the South. I guess they didn’t hear the story about the “Wanderer” which according to an article I read was a slave ship used by Southerners to travel to Africa and purchase slaves to sell in the South. My question is was this maybe a wealthy group of Planters that was involved in the Slave trade?
There were some clandestine operations by Southerners aimed at skirting the prohibition on the international slave trade, but the majority of the capital for such ventures came from the North. Look up the history of the Brown family (Brown University) or where the money used to pay for Faneuil Hall originated.
