Professor Herbener, In your lecture on State Intervention in the Northern Colonies you state that Massachusetts paid a 25% subsidy for all linens etc. Where did that subsidy money come from? Tax dollars? Tax credits?
The subsidies were funded mainly by taxes and fees. Here’s a article on the early colonial imposition of fees and taxes:

Thanks, looks like low taxes and tax evasion are part of early American history. The only thing that has changed is the low taxes.
