    Mr. Birzer:

Thank you so much for this series. I had the pleasure of watching the whole series and look forward to reading the books in the bibliography. The question I have is what biographies of George Custer are reliable. Thom Hatch seems to paint a sympathetic picture of Custer which is strange since he spoke glowingly of black Kettle in a previous bio.

Hey, thanks for the good words. Anything written by Robert Utley or Paul Hutton is more than reliable. Custer had his good side–two of his cavalry soldiers from the Civil War are buried across the street from me. He certainly held his own against JEB Stuart on Day 3 of Gettysburg. Still, when it comes to the Indians, he’s pretty nasty. There’s some great work on Custer by William Chalfant as well.

    Dr. Birzer:

Thanks for the info. I met Robert Utley here in Scottsdale a few years ago. He wrote a nice bio of Geronimo in 2013 and just completed another work. His health has not been good and I will be surprised if he writes another work.
