Good to see that the people at Chronicle aren’t afraid of dropping the c word. I wrote a paper on the EU a couple of semesters ago and my impression was that the people of Europe generally liked the EU because it gave economic benefits. The EU-philes/crats would love to think that it is a love of being an European that is the reason for joining/staying in the EU.
My point is that if EU ceases to give economic benefits to its member countries then the only thing holding it together is power and a fear of what should replace it.
I can’t speak first hand from what is going on in other European countries but here in Denmark the youth parties of the 3-4 big right wing parties are turning against the EU on anti-socialist grounds. So far this voice isn’t rising because the party leaderships won’t promote these heretical opinions but this only creates a political opportunity for some new party to take advantage of this unrest just as was the case with the anti-immigrations parties in Europe that flourished in the 90’s.
